MAJOR NATIONAL LATINO ORGANIZATIONS SUPPORT STRONG MERCURY AND AIR TOXICS STANDARDS, JOIN WITH CENTER FOR AMERICAN PROGRESS TO PROMOTE LATINO ENGAGEMENT   

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Leaders of the National Latino Coalition on Climate Change (NLCCC) are partnering with the Center for American Progress (CAP) Action Fund to launch a campaign urging the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to mandate reductions in life-threatening air pollution such as mercury, arsenic and other air toxics that are currently released by power plants without limits.  The EPA’s Mercury and Air Toxics Rule is critical to protect Latinos and other communities of color from disproportionate exposure to air pollution linked to a litany of health problems, from asthma, to strokes, cancer and premature death. 

“Poverty combined with lack of health care coverage, legal status and language barriers undermine the ability of Latino and immigrant families to manage the impact of air pollution on their health and their family budgets.  This is why strong mercury and air toxics protections are a health and economic imperative for Latinos.  To protect our communities, we will work aggressively to engage Latinos in the public commenting period and push for the adoption of the new standards,” said Rafael Fantauzzi, Chair of the NLCCC and President and CEO of the National Puerto Rican Coalition, Inc. (NPRC). 

“This is crucial opportunity to regulate the annual amount of 772 million pounds of extremely harmful air pollutants that jeopardize the health of our communities and undermine child development.   Mercury, arsenic, lead, acid gases and other heavy metals are extremely dangerous and are associated with health problems like asthma, birth defects, brain damage, heart disease and cancer. The health risks are many but what matters is what we can do now to mitigate them for good,” said Lillian Rodriguez Lopez, NLCCC Vice Chair and President of the Hispanic Federation.

“The proposed Mercury and Air Toxics Rule also presents an opportunity to create jobs and pave the way for a clean energy future.   When power plants are required to mitigate the emissions of air toxics, implementing pollution reduction strategies will create jobs in the manufacturing, installation and maintenance of new technologies.  According to the EPA, the rule will create 31,000 short-term construction jobs and 9,000 permanent jobs thereafter. This is an opportunity to put people back to work and create jobs that will improve the quality of our environment,” said Hector E. Sanchez, Executive Director of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) and NLCCC Vice Chair.

ORGANIZACIONES NACIONALES LATINAS APOYAN LOS NUEVOS ESTÁNDARES DE MERCURIO Y TÓXICOS EN EL AIRE, SE UNEN A CAMPAÑA PARA EXIGIR SU IMPLEMENTACION E INVOLUCRAR A LA COMUNIDAD LATINA

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Los líderes de la Coalición Nacional Latina sobre el Cambio Climático (NLCCC) colaborarán con el Centro para el Progreso Americano (CAP) Fondo de Acción para poner en marcha una campaña instando a la Secretaría de Protección Ambiental (EPA) que se implemente los Nuevos Estándares de Mercurio y Tóxicos en el Aire para Plantas Energéticas para reducir la contaminación del mercurio, arsénico, gases ácidos  y otras sustancias tóxicas que son actualmente liberadas por las plantas energéticas sin límites alguno.  Estos contaminantes ponen en peligro la vida y la salud.  Los nuevos estándares son fundamentales para proteger a los latinos quienes son desproporcionadamente expuestos a contaminantes vinculados con problemas de salud, como el asma, derrames cerebrales, cáncer y hasta la muerte prematura. El 66 por ciento de los latinos viven en áreas donde la contaminación en el aire excede los estándares federales de calidad del aire.
 
"La pobreza combinada con la falta de cobertura de salud, la situación legal y las barreras del idioma quebrantan  la capacidad de las familias latinas para controlar el impacto de la contaminación del aire en su salud y su presupuesto familiar. Esto subraya la importancia de los Nuevos Estándares de Mercurio y Tóxicos en el Aire para la salud y la economía familiar. Para proteger a nuestras comunidades, vamos a trabajar fuertemente para envolver a  los latinos en el periodo de comentarios públicos para impulsar la adopción de las nuevas normas, " dijo Rafael Fantauzzi, Presidente de la NLCCC, y Presidente y CEO de la Coalición Nacional Puertorriqueña, Inc. (NPRC).

"Esta es una oportunidad sumamente importante para regular 772 millones de libras de contaminantes extremadamente nocivos que se emiten al aire anualmente y ponen en peligro la salud de nuestras comunidades y el desarrollo de nuestros niños. El mercurio, arsénico, plomo, gases ácidos y otros metales ​​son altamente peligrosos y están asociados con problemas de salud como asma, defectos congénitos, daño cerebral, enfermedades cardíacas y cáncer. Los riesgos para la salud son muchos, pero lo que importa es lo que podemos hacer ahora para erradicarlos para siempre," dijo Lillian Rodríguez López, Vicepresidenta, de la NLCCC y Presidenta de la Hispanic Federation.

"Las leyes propuestas de Mercurio y Tóxicos del Aire también nos presentan una oportunidad para crear empleos y un futuro con nuevas tecnologías y energía limpia. Cuando las plantas de energía necesiten disminuir sus emisiones de tóxicos, la aplicación de estrategias para reducir la contaminación va a crear puestos de trabajo en la fabricación, instalación y mantenimiento de estas nuevas tecnologías. Según la EPA, los estándares crearán 31.000 empleos en la construcción a corto plazo y 9.000 puestos de trabajo permanentes a partir de entonces. Esta es una oportunidad para mejorar la calidad de nuestro medio ambiente y poner a trabajar a la gente desempleada," dijo Héctor E. Sánchez, Director Ejecutivo del Consejo Sindical para el Avance Latinoamericano (LCLAA) y Vicepresidente de la NLCCC.
