LATINO LEADERS REFUTE MISLEADING ARGUMENTS ABOUT IMMIGRANTS AND THE ENVIRONMENT, CALL FOR HONEST DISCUSSION ON CLIMATE CHANGE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Center for American Progress (CAP) released, “From a Green Farce to a Green Future, Refuting False Claims About Immigrants and the Environment,” a report that disproves fabricated environmental arguments used to blame immigrants for our climate problems. The National Latino Coalition on Climate Change (NLCCC), a coalition of prominent Latino civil rights organizations denounces unmerited scapegoating on a community that lives greener and is a key stakeholder in the fight against climate change.

The report analyses the nexus between the issue of immigration and climate change and energy policy and sets the record straight, refuting environmental fallacies that are using the immigrant community as a scapegoat for our environmental problems. Jorge Madrid, the report’s author and Research Associate at the Center for American Progress calls these statements a “green farce.” “Anti-immigrants groups are using environmental concerns as a cover to argue that immigrants are destroying our environment, accelerating climate change and diminishing U.S. efforts to transition to a clean energy economy and a green future. My research debunks these myths and shows that immigrants not only live greener and practice sustainable habits but they also overwhelmingly support policy that will combat global warming and create jobs,” added Jorge Madrid.


Rafael Fantauzzi, NLCCC Chair and President of the National Puerto Rican Coalition, Inc. (NPRC) stated, “Climate change and its impacts are a growing threat to the health, safety and economic advancement of communities throughout the United States. Latinos and the immigrant community have a stake in fighting climate change. Due to socioeconomic factors, emerging communities, the poor and the elderly are among the most vulnerable to environmental degradation, climatic disasters and changes in energy prices. We cannot afford to let misinformation distract us from the dialogue and policies needed to protect the quality of our environment and transition our country to an energy-efficient and sustainable future powered by clean and renewable energy sources.”

“The American public deserves the truth about the gravity and magnitude of climate change and perpetuating a false notion of immigrants as a contributing factor to our environmental problems does nothing to advance the policies needed to combat these critical problems. The report demonstrates that the cities with high carbon emissions per capita have low immigrant populations and cities with high immigrant populations are low polluters. Tackling our climate change and energy problem warrants real and immediate solutions that will protect human health and create economic opportunities as we reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make our country more energy efficient,” added Lillian Rodriguez-Lopez, NLCCC vice-chair and President of the Hispanic Federation.

Hector E. Sanchez, Executive Director of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) and vice chair of the NLCCC affirmed, "Economic insecurity combined with our Congress’ failure to deliver immigration reform has exacerbated the vulnerability of the immigrant community to serve as scapegoats for the nation’s woes and this is not new to the Latino community. But beyond the misinformation, separate studies by the NLCCC, the Sierra Club and NRDC clearly indicate that Latinos are among the strongest supporters of policies to combat climate change. Our political leaders and candidates must keep this in mind as we approach the midterm elections."

Mark Magaña, Executive Director of the NLCCC stated, "Something as serious as global warming necessitates an intellectually honest dialogue as well as activists and leaders that seek to unify communities in collaborative efforts to counter this global problem. There are many who have consistently politicized the highly sensitive topic of immigration to thwart legislative progress on several crucial issues ranging from health care for children, to housing and education. We cannot let this happen with something as critical as climate change."

The NLCCC is a joint effort led by the National Puerto Rican Coalition, Inc. (NPRC), the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) and the Hispanic Federation. NLCCC members include 13 prominent national Latino civil rights and advocacy organizations. ). The NLCCC was established to work collaboratively and ensure that Latinos have an integral voice in the national dialogue on climate change.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (13 de Octubre de 2010)- Hoy, el Centro para el Progreso Americano (CAP por sus siglas en inglés) dio a conocer el reporte, "De Una "Farsa Verde" a un Futuro Verde”, refutando así los falsos señalamientos sobre los inmigrantes y su impacto en el medio ambiente," un informe que refuta los argumentos ambientales prefabricados y utilizados para culpar a los inmigrantes por nuestros problemas ambientales y climáticos. La Coalición Nacional Latina sobre el Cambio Climático (NLCCC), una coalición de importantes organizaciones latinas de derechos civiles está denunciando así el inmerecido trato de “chivos expiatorios” para una comunidad que convive con menor impacto ambiental.



El reporte analiza la relación entre el asunto de la inmigración, el cambio climático y la política energética y en este se refutan las falsedades sobre del medio ambiente en la que algunos están utilizando a la comunidad inmigrante como el “chivo expiatorio” de nuestros problemas ambientales. Jorge Madrid, autor del informe e investigador asociado del CAP, llama a estas declaraciones la "farsa verde." "Los grupos anti-inmigrantes están usando las preocupaciones ambientales como una máscara para argumentar que los inmigrantes están destruyendo nuestro medio ambiente, provocando la aceleración del cambio climático y disminuyendo los esfuerzos de EE.UU. para transitar a una economía de energía limpia y un futuro más verde. “Mi investigación contradice estas declaraciones y muestra que los inmigrantes no sólo viven con menor impacto ambiental, o de manera más ”verde” e incluso tienen hábitos ecológicos sostenibles, sino que también apoyan de manera contundente las políticas de combate al calentamiento global, y a favor de la creación de empleos verdes", agregó Jorge Madrid.


Rafael Fantauzzi, Presidente de la NLCCC y de la Coalición Nacional Puertorriqueña, Inc. (NPRC por sus siglas en inglés) declaró: "El cambio climático y su impacto es una amenaza creciente para la salud, la seguridad y el progreso económico de las comunidades en todo Estados Unidos. Los latinos y la comunidad de inmigrantes tienen un evidente interés en la lucha contra el cambio climático. Debido a factores socioeconómicos, las nuevas comunidades, los pobres y los ancianos son los más vulnerables a la degradación del medio ambiente, los desastres climáticos y las elevadas tarifas del servicio eléctrico. No podemos permitir que la desinformación nos distraigan del diálogo político necesario para proteger la calidad de nuestro medio ambiente e impulsar la transición de nuestro país hacia un futuro sostenible con eficiencia energética, sostenido por fuentes de energía limpias y renovables."


"El público estadounidense merece la verdad a cerca de la gravedad y magnitud del cambio climático y perpetuar la falsa noción de los inmigrantes como un problema ambiental limita el dialogue sobre las políticas necesarias para combatir el cambio climático. El informe demuestra que las ciudades con alta emisiones de carbono per capita tienen una baja población de inmigrantes y que en cambio, las ciudades con alta población de inmigrantes presentan bajas emisiones de contaminantes. La lucha contra el cambio climático y en pro de la energía verde garantizan una solución inmediata que protegerá la salud humana y creará oportunidades económicas para reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y así nuestro país pueda ser más eficiente en el uso de la energía" agregó Lillian Rodríguez-López, vice-presidente NLCCC y Presidente de la Federación Hispana.


Por su parte, Hector E. Sánchez, Director Ejecutivo del Consejo Laboral para el Avance del Trabajador Latinoamericano (LCLAA) y vicepresidente de la NLCCC afirmó, "La inseguridad económica en combinación con la falta de una reforma migratoria, han exacerbado la vulnerabilidad de la comunidad inmigrante para servir de “chivos expiatorios” ante los problemas de la nación y esto no es nuevo para la comunidad latina. Pero más allá de la falta de información, separadamente los estudios hechos por el NLCCC, el Sierra Club y NRDC indican claramente que los latinos se encuentran entre los más fuertes partidarios de las políticas para combatir el cambio climático. Nuestros líderes políticos y los candidatos deben tener esto en cuenta cuando nos acercamos a las elecciones de mitad de período”.


Finalmente, Mark Magaña, Director Ejecutivo de la NLCCC declaró: "Algo tan serio como el calentamiento global requiere un diálogo intelectualmente honesto al igual como activistas y líderes que traten de unificar a las comunidades alrededor del esfuerzo de colaborar en la lucha contra este problema mundial. Hay muchos que siempre han politizado la inmigración, aprovechándose de la alta sensibilidad al tema para impedir avances legislativos en varios asuntos fundamentales, que van desde el cuidado de la salud para los niños, hasta la vivienda y la educación. No podemos permitir que esto suceda con algo tan trascendental como el cambio climático y el calentamiento global".
