NLCCC in Raleigh, NC- Leaders Roundtable and Green Jobs Session

To ensure that the health, economic, and environmental interests of Latinos are protected, the NLCCC has held regional briefings in Chicago, IL, New York, NY, Orlando, FL, Philadelphia, PA, and Albuquerque, NM to help inform and engage local leadership and communities on global warming. The purpose of these briefings is to convene local Latino/minority leaders in government, advocacy, environmental, business, and a to discuss the challenges and opportunities that global warming presents for the Latino community. The briefing in Raleigh, NC will give local and state leaders an overview of: what climate change is, how it is impacting North Carolina, what’s at stake for Latinos and why local engagement is critical. The Green Jobs Training and Employment Information Session will focus on how local communities can reap the benefits of the “green” jobs movement and the transition to a clean-energy economy.

Dr. H. Nolo Martínez, a Puerto Rican native, is a Research Scientist at the Bryan School of Business and Economics at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. On Monday, December 14th, Dr. Martinez joined us to discuss: "The State of Latinos in North Carolina; the opportunities and challenges that environmental conditions present for Latinos in this state." Mr. Kalland gives the Leaders Roundtable an overview of his work at the NC Solar Center, renewable energy and the connection to green jobs. Steve Kalland is the Director of the North Carolina Solar Center and has over 12 years of experience in energy policy, particularly with renewable energy and energy efficiency. SEE VIDEO

To address Latino workers in the audience with limited English proficiency, Amanda Zidek-Vanega gave a presentation in Spanish about the various training and certification opportunities that the North Carolina Solar Center provides for workers and employers. Amanda is a policy analyst at the N.C. Solar Center where she tracks policies and programs that promote renewables and energy efficiency in the United States. SEE VIDEO
