NLCCC at LCLAA Convention- Climate Change and Green Jobs- What a Clean-Energy Economy Means for Our Workforce and the Health and Prosperity of our Nation.
Aug 4, 2010 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Description:
Few of us think about the pronounced public health and economic consequences that global warming and climate change have on the quality of our air, our water, and the environment that our families live, work, study and play in. Communities throughout the U.S. and the world are already being affected by environmental degradation and climatic destruction caused by hurricanes, snowstorms, floods, wildfires and droughts. This year our nation witnessed the risks of our dependence on dirty sources of energy: In West Virginia, the worst mining disaster in four decades cost 29 coal-miners their lives. An explosion at the British Petroleum (BP) oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico killed 11 workers and has become the worst oil spill in U.S. history; threatening livelihoods and ecology in the Gulf.
This general session event was sponsored by the National Latino Coalition on Climate Change (NLCCC) and it brought together prominent leaders from the labor, environmental and Latino community to address the challenges and opportunities presented by climate change. The speakers provided convention attendees with the information needed to advocate for climate and energy legislation that reduces harmful and climate-changing gases in our air, creates quality jobs and promotes safe and clean-energy that protects workers and our environment.
The NLCCC will share data from our recent poll "Attitudes of Latino Voters on Energy Policy and Climate Change" which indicates that Latino voters in Nevada, Florida and Colorado believe that global warming is a serious issue that they want Congress to address immediately. As the midterm elections approach, Latino voters said that they would be more willing to vote for a Senate candidate that supports action to tackle global warming and promote clean-energy. A resolution in support of the creation of a clean energy economy and another one on green jobs were introduced for approval by the LCLAA membership.
