LATINOS GOING GREEN, NEW YORK, NY

EmailPrint

About the Briefing: It is well documented that Latinos and low-income communities in general are disproportionately affected by environmental pollution, and are therefore more susceptible to develop cancer and respiratory illnesses such as asthma. However, few Latinos think about the pronounced social and economic consequences their communities will suffer from the effects of global warming: flooding, increased air pollution, groundwater contamination, and coastal erosion and inundation. Latino non-profits can play an increasingly critical role in galvanizing Latinos around this grave issue. The overall goal of the briefing will be to inform, educate and empower nonprofits on how they can lead a Latino climate change movement.

The briefing discussion will focus on the following points:

• Impact of climate change on Latino communities;
• How CBOs can lessen their carbon footprint;
• Driving policy change at the federal, state and local levels
• Empowering a new generation of Latino climate activists.
